Sources close to ‘Chiyaan’ Vikram say that the actor has been ‘hugely upset’ at not getting any recognition at the recently announced national awards for films. The national awards gave as many as five awards to Tamil film makers and artistes.Lesser known Appukkutty, a diminutive actor who had played the central character in director Suseendhiran’s Azhagarasmiyin Kudhirai, walked away with the national award for ‘best supporting actor’ to the surprise of many. Even within Kollywood, there have been murmurs heard about the choice of the actor for the award with some openly commenting that for his ‘looks’, he deserved nothing.
Vikram, who had perfectly enacted the role of a mentally challenged person in last year’s Deivathirumagal directed by Vijay, was widely considered as one of the contenders to receive the national award for ‘best actor’. However, the fact that the film was a frame-by-frame version of the Hollywood film I am Sam (which starred Sean Penn in the lead role) probably put it out of contention.
Though the film was in contention under the categories of ‘best film’, ‘best actor’ and ‘best director’, it ended up winning awards in not one category. Another hero who is also worried about not winning the coveted national award for ‘best actor’ is our own Vishal, who recently led the team of Tamil actors to their CCL Trophy triumph. Vishal, who appeared ‘squint-eyed’ throughout the film, is reportedly wondering what he would have to do to attract the attention of the Jury.
